Dubbed Teesside’s ‘Rudest and Crudest comedian’, Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown is certainly for the more tolerant audience. Even those who would not consider themselves easily shocked can find themselves surprised at Chubby’s cutting humour. One thing can’t be denied, Chubby has certainly built himself into one of this area most famous comedians and he’s done it with no help from either TV or Radio appearances. No channel has yet had the guts to attempt to broadcast one of his performances!
Chubby hails from Grangetown in Middlesbrough. His father worked in the nearby steel industry and his mother was a housewife. In his early years he had numerous jobs including a stint in the Merchant Navy, a cook, waiter, scaffolder and a try at following in his fathers footsteps in the steel industry. He then formed a band which, with the mix of music and comedy from the regions working mens clubs, eventually evolved into a musical comedy act.
After an appearance on TV’s ‘Opportunity Knocks’, coming fourth to a spoon player, it was his manager of the time that Chubby should consider turning his act into a full blown rude and crude act. At first, he wasn’t 100% comfortably with this, but after a few goes at it, settled into the role well. And a role is what it is.
Chubby is not comfortable with swearing outside of his act. In fact, he feels quite strongly about swearing in front of women and children outside of his act. He is simply filling a niche in the market for those who feel entertained by that sort of thing. He is quite plain in the way he feels, if you don’t like it - don’t listen to it! Love him or hate him, there’s not many comics who could fill a civic hall or theatre with the minimum of advertising and no TV or Radio coverage, but the people who attend his gigs know what to expect and come away thoroughly entertained!
