Gritter MIDDLESBROUGH Council has been warming up its gritters in preparation for the onset of winter. The road maintenance crews are now on 24-hour stand-by waiting for the first cold snap. There are six gritters, each fitted with the latest mapping systems, to keep track of the vehicles as they cover the council's 180km of primary routes.
Ron Lowes, the executive member for transport, said: "The crews are out at all times and all weathers and do an excellent job to keep the town moving. "We are as ready as we can be for the winter, but we have to stress that road users also need to do their bit too. "Motorists need to plan journeys ahead of time, and leave themselves a little bit of extra time when there's bad weather. "They should also follow the advice given by the main motoring organisations about safe winter driving."
