 Pudsey Fundraisers organised events throughout the area, including grown men being nearly reduced to tears when being waxed, children walking a mile and youngsters recording a CD of songs.
Their efforts helped the national appeal to raise an estimated £5.4m by late last night. Teachers and lectures at Middlesbrough College and Grangefield School, Stockton, braved hot wax to have their legs and backs stripped of hair. At Grangefield School, staff and students raised more than £2,000 with leg waxing, hair shaving and collections. Young mothers and their children from Tees Valley Housing Group's Anna Courtdevelopment for teenage mothers were joined by staff from the project when they undertook a sponsored walk. About 25 people, all wearing Pudsey Bear face paint, took part in the Hartlepool toddle from Anna Court, in Flaxton Street, and along York Road, raising about £500. Pupils from Billingham's Pentland Primary School recorded a CD, the Charm Singer, featuring songs written for the album by music teacher Su Price. The discs will go on sale at the school on December 1, costing £7.50. The singers will perform songs from the CD at the school on Wednesday and Thursday, December 13 and 14. Members of the Newtown Community Resource Centre, Stockton, took part in a one-mile sponsored walk around the town's Ropner Park to raise vital money. Rosedene Nurseries had several activities at its three sites in east Cleveland. At Guisborough, the youngsters held a day-long pyjama party, with staff also joining in. It was red and yellow day for children at the Marske nursery, and at Saltburn they enjoyed a tea party throughout the day. Pudsey visited the children at Kader Primary School, in Middlesbrough, where pupils spent the day learning about children's rights. Many wrote poems about the lessons they learnt. Students at Hartlepool English Martyrs School held a fun day that included raffles and a tombola.
