A TEENAGER will perform at a Darlington concert after winning the town's Young Singer of the Year competition.

Hayley McKay, 14, was one of six singers in the grand final of the Music for Darlington competition, at Elm Ridge Methodist Church, in Darlington.

She impressed the judges with outstanding renditions of the title track from Whistle Down The Wind, and the ballad Colours of the Wind, from Walt Disney's Pocahontas.

As a result, Hayley will give a performance at the Promenade for Youth Concert, which is being held at Carmel School in Darlington, on Thursday, May 11.

She will also receive a cash prize of £100, plus a voucher worth £100 for a singing coach.

The competition, supported by The Northern Echo, was open to competent musicians, aged 12 to 18, who were able perform either classical or light music.

The competition attracted a record number of entrants, who each supplied the judges with a three-minute CD or cassette demo.

The other finalists short-listed for the final were Lauren Hill, Georgia Lowry and Rebecca Rouse, all 14, along with Lauren Power and Louise Scott, both 16.

Each finalist received a framed certificate.

All proceeds raised from the Darlington Young Singer final and the forthcoming Promenade for Youth Concert will be split equally between a number of local charities, including St Teresa's Hospice.

Tickets for the Promenade for Youth Concert, are £6 and are available from Williams Music, Blackwellgate, Darlington.
