James Cook was born in Marton, now a suburb of Middlesbrough, on 27th October 1728. As a boy he lived at the foot of Roseberry Topping in Aireyholme Farm, going to school at nearby Great Ayton.
John Walker was a small time chemist who had a small shop on Stocktons High Street. He regularly sold gunpowders to local people and experimented with combustible materials.

His love of the game continued for years to come, with Bob playing for Middlesbrough Boys and also becoming captain of his University team.
