Middlesbrough’s renowned festival, one of the biggest multi-cultural events in the North East, will this year boast a brand new global arts area, in addition to its already diverse programme of music, fashion, food, poetry, games and arts activities. The new stage will represent a broad spectrum of arts and entertainment, with a truly international flavour. Headlining acts already confirmed include the critically acclaimed, London-based music collective; Transglobal Underground, who will be entertaining audiences with a fusion of Western, Arabic, Indian and African music. Other confirmed performers include: - Bapi Das Baul & Senses
- Drummed Up
- Manding Kaira
- Smokin’ Sisters
The main stage will be providing an eclectic mix of music and dance, which this year includes a headline performance from Taz of Stereo Nation, who’s album went on to become one of the biggest selling Asian fusion releases of all time. The stage will also welcome live performances from Legacy, RnB sensation Anusha and M2K featuring Don Dee. Zee TV presenter Dolfin will host the event along with DJ’s XS-Bass who are sure to get event-goers in the festival spirit. This year also welcomes a Junk Band Jamboree, where pupils from local schools will perform music using junk instruments, whilst gathering litter to be used by students from the Cleveland College of Art and Design to create an exciting mural in Albert Park. As always, there will also be a range of food stalls, arts activities and much more! Sports MelaThe Sports Mela will take place on Saturday 14th July, also at Albert Park, and provides an ideal opportunity for both children and adults to participate in a wide range of sporting and physical activities. This year the many activities on offer will include a climbing wall, bungee trampolines, an Army obstacle course, paintball range, tennis factory, men’s volleyball competition, an athletics and orienteering competition (in which four schools compete), and football and cricket activities. For those who prefer something a little more sedate, the mile-long walk around the park offers a more relaxing option.
With so much to see and do, it is anticipated that this year will be the biggest and best Middlesbrough Mela yet, attracting increased audiences and participants from across the local community and beyond. The event will once again be broadcast live across the world via a webcast, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the students of the University of Teesside, proving that this year’s festival truly is global!
